Career: Seeking New Director for Health Services & Policy

Description

Description:

The UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) seeks a dynamic, accomplished scholar with expertise in health services/health policy research and appropriate management experience, to provide inspirational leadership for one of Canada’s leading health services/health policy research Centres.

CHSPR was founded in 1990. The originating vision – to create a campus‐wide home for interdisciplinary research focused on applied health services and health policy research of relevance to Canadians – is, if anything, more relevant today than it was at inception. Located within the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), it is currently the research home to seven full‐time university‐funded faculty members (most of whose academic appointments are in the SPPH), one emeritus but still active faculty member, and 15‐25 staff supporting a wide range of research projects. Current research foci include pharmaceutical use and policy, health human resources, health care utilization, financing and funding, primary care and long‐term‐care policy. The faculty members oversee in excess of $2 million in annual grants and contracts. The faculty members’ primary teaching responsibilities are in graduate teaching within the programs offered by the SPPH; they also work closely with a wide range of policy‐makers across Canada and internationally. CHSPR organizes and hosts the longest continuously‐running health policy conference in the country.

Reporting to the Executive Associate Dean, Research, in the Faculty of Medicine, and supported by Associate Directors with responsibilities for education, data infrastructure, research, and knowledge translation and communications, the Director of CHSPR assumes overall responsibility for the strategic direction and operation of the Centre. Specific responsibilities include business and partnership development and non‐research‐grant fund‐raising, finances, human resources, strategic planning, space, and infrastructure and non‐research staffing, and may also include responsibility for one or more of the associate director portfolios. The Director represents the Centre on a number of internal and external committees including (within UBC) the Faculty of Medicine Centre Directors and Research Network, and the SPPH executive committee, and (outside UBC) the Canadian health services research Centre Directors’ Network. It is expected, though not required, that the Director of CHSPR will play a variety of leadership roles within the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR), and within the SPPH. The Director also takes responsibility for leading the Centre through periodic internal and external reviews, and for serving as, or ensuring adequate, mentor(ship) for Centre faculty.

In addition to the responsibilities embodied within the Directorship, the incumbent will also be responsible for (a reduced amount of) teaching, supervision of graduate students, and for maintaining an active research program. The Director will be eligible for a study leave after completing a full five‐year term. A second five‐year term may be considered, if mutually agreed by the incumbent and the Executive Associate Dean, Research, Faculty of Medicine. The successful candidate's academic salary will be supplemented by an appropriate administrative stipend.

This position is open to all internal (UBC) applicants at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor with tenure. The Director will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. health services research, health policy, health economics), a strong research track record including at least ten years of experience building and leading successful research teams, as well as outstanding educational credentials. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2012 or a date to be mutually agreed.
