Dr. Kim McGrail has been named the Commonwealth Fund Canadian Harkness Associate in Health Care Policy and Practice for 2009/10. This prestigious award will provide a unique opportunity for Dr. McGrail to work on an international research project, studying high-performing health care systems with leading US health policy experts. The award also provides the opportunity to collaborate with nine other Harkness Fellows from the UK, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand.

The Fellowships are a major component of the Commonwealth Fund's International Program in Health Policy and Practice. Through developing a global network of policy-oriented health care researchers, the program seeks to stimulate innovative thinking on health policy and practice in the US and other industrialized countries.

Dr. McGrail’s research for this award will focus on regional variations in health care costs and quality, and on policies that may help reduce variations. She will conduct case studies of high-performing health systems within the US to identify policy ideas and experiments that are planned or in place to address variations, and to assess their relevance for Canada.

Dr. McGrail is a Faculty member and Associate Director of the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, and an Assistant Professor at the School of Population and Public Health. She currently sits on the board of Population Data BC and serves as their Scientific Advisor.

Today's news marks CHSPR's third award in this competition, with Dr. Steve Morgan and Dr. Diane Watson receiving Fellowships in 2001 and 2006 respectively.
