In the most competitive year to date for studentships from BC’s Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR), CHSPR celebrates the success of two graduate students, CHSPR PhD students Gillian Hanley and Laura Housden. Gillian Hanley has been awarded the Senior Graduate Studentship in Health Services Research for her thesis project, measuring equity in the use and financing of prescription medicines in BC. Laura Housden received the Junior Graduate Studentship in Health Services Research for her work on the nurse practitioner’s role in primary care group medical visits.
The MSFHR Research Trainee Program Award supports highly qualified Master’s, PhD and Post Doctoral trainees to prepare for careers as independent health researchers. The recipients are selected as exceptional students who have contributed significantly to their affiliated research programs.
“Receiving funding from MSFHR allows me to concentrate on my research and to develop as an independent investigator without financial burden. It is an honour to be a part of such a great group of trainees and to be recognized as one of the top health services research trainees in BC” says Gillian Hanley.
“I am very excited to have been chosen for a Michael Smith Junior Graduate Trainee Award in Health Services Research. Not only does it provide me with financial support to complete my dissertation, but it is a privilege to be a part of the MSFHR scholarly legacy. I am grateful for the continued support from my faculty supervisor, Dr. Sabrina Wong, and the UBC School of Nursing ” says Laura Housden.
“Whether it is provincial or national funding competitions, CHSPR students have regularly been recognized as leaders in their field,” says Steve Morgan, CHSPR Associate Director of Training. “Gillian and Laura’s recent awards are great achievements that continue that tradition of excellence,” adds Morgan.
Faculty and staff at CHSPR extend their congratulations to our two exceptional graduate students.
